White Christmas all over Canada
Monday, December 29, 2008
This year, for the first time since 1971, there has been a
White Christmas all over Canada. For Vancouver, this is especially
rare (according to Environment Canada, Vancouver has a
11% chance of having a
White Christmas). We had 4 consecutive snow storms in the latter
half of December resulting in over 60cm (2 feet) of snow (on average,
Vancouver usually only gets about 48cm of snow per year, and we are now
within 2cm of beating the
all-time December record of 80.7cm of snow!). For some
people, the snow meant
camping out at Vancouver airport (or other
airports around the country). Luckily, both my daughters were able to get here, so
we could just enjoy the snow.

Yesterday, the weather cleared up and I decided to shovel the snow off
the roof. This is actually not a very good idea as it can be
dangerous; however, our roof does not have a big
pitch (so the snow
doesn't slide off very easily) and I was getting a bit worried about
the weight of all that snow on the roof (even though we don't
normally get so much snow in Vancouver, I've now ordered a
snow roof rake so that I'm prepared in the future). So, I spent most of yesterday
shovelling the accumulated snow off the roof. Luckily, I didn't fall
off the roof; however, my back was pretty sore at the end of the
day. But, a bottle of Merlot and a bit of Johnny Walker fixed that! ;-)
