Summary of lispvan July 2008 meeting - Web development with Lisp and UCW (With Lisp it's cheaper)
Thursday, July 24, 2008
At the July 2008 meeting of lispvan, Ryan Davis described how the small team of developers that he works with at Acceleration.net use UCW and Lisp to create dynamic web sites. Of particular interest was his commentary on how they moved to Lisp after using other web development tools (at around minute 48 in the movie). He said that they went from being a pure Microsoft shop to using Python to using Ruby on Rails to using Lisp/UCW. He contrasted the experiences - here are some of his observations:
- Microsoft .Net: it took forever to do anything, ASP's are a wreck
- RoR: not being able to tell what was going on because nothing was inspectable
- Lisp/UCW: easiest and most straight-forward to use once you get over the learning curve, a very pleasant environment to work in.
The movie is available online here.
One of the Lisp/UCW web sites that they developed appeared on TV too (who says Lisp doesn't get headlines any more ;-) ). There is a lot more information about Ryan's experiences on his technical blog. Thanks Ryan for an interesting presentation - it's always nice to see how people are using Lisp to make a living and have fun at the same time!
