Vancouver Lisp Meeting? - Part 2
Monday, May 1, 2006
I've
suggested before that Vancouver might be a good place to hold a
Lisp meetup along the lines of an
ILC or an
ECLM. In response to that blog post, I received a lot of
emails from people saying that they thought it was a terrific idea
and that they would like to attend such a meetup in Vancouver. Now that the stories
of the ECLM meeting are
filtering in, I'm starting to think
about whether this might be doable. Edi, Arthur, and the rest of the ECLM
organizers have shown how attractive a 1-day get-together can be and
they have set a good example for others. I'm also wondering whether
there might be a third way of organizing a meetup that could be
appealing to people.
Among other things, what if, instead of sending out a request for papers, we actively
solicit speakers to come talk on a particular topic? In other words,
ask specific individuals to speak on a topic that people have
indicated that they would like
to hear about. For example, I would love to see the following:
- Daniel Barlow (Araneida), Edi Weitz (TBNL), John Foderaro (AllegroServe), Marc Battyani (mod_lisp and own framework), Marco Barringer (UCW) in a "Roundtable Discussion on CL Web Servers and Application Frameworks" session discussing the pros/cons of different CL approaches to web-based application development.
- Duane Rettig (Allegro CL), Dave Fox (LispWorks), Gary Byers (OpenMCL), Bruno Haible (CLISP), William Newman/Christophe Rhodes (SBCL) in a "Battle of the CL Compilers" session discussing CL implementation techniques and optimization strategies.
- Peter Norvig on "How we use CL 'under the covers' at Google"
- Paul Graham on "Arc is Released!"
There are a whole bunch of neat topics/speakers that I can think of; however, before doing a brain dump here on my blog, I'd like to ask what others would like to see/hear at some future Lisp meetup. Send me an email and let me know!
