Vancouver Lisp Users Group meeting for March

Thursday, March 9, 2006

Wow, when are we going to have a dull lispvan topic? Coby Beck (well known for his frequent posts on c.l.l.) will be giving the March lispvan presentation. It will cover two topics of interest to all Lispers:

  1. Domain Specific Languages (DSLs)
  2. Finding work in Lisp
Incidentally, on the subject of DSL's, there's a post today on LtU about a new paper titled "When and how to develop domain-specific languages". I haven't read it yet, but it looks interesting. DSL's are a topic that I've posted about quite a bit in the past (see here, here, here, here, here, here), so I'm definitely looking forward to hearing Coby's talk!

Here's the "official" meeting notice:

Topic: DSL's and Lisp Work
Presenter: Coby Beck
Date: Thursday, March 23, 2006
Time: 7pm - 10pm (or whenever)
Venue: Think!, 4512 West 10th Ave., Vancouver (see map)
Summary: Coby will be presenting an overview of a Domain Specific Language for describing the user requirements of a database application. He'll also describe (with no regard for the line between the intention and the reality ;) the process whereby this language is processed and an application (complete with documentation and installation scripts) is generated.

He will preface the topic with the tale of how he came to be working with (and on) this application, while living in Vancouver and working for a company in Tasmania, Australia. This will be an interesting story about how he managed to land one Lisp job after another in a world of Java and C#.

Mark your calendars and we'll see you on March 23rd!
