Hiring a President

Monday, November 1, 2004

Ok, so this is my second non-Lisp post in two days (and some of you aren't too happy about it), but I promise to stop soon. ;-)

I just wanted to point out an excellent article by Peter Norvig (author of the wonderful book "Paradigms of Artificial Intelligence Programming") titled " Hiring a President". He is very articulate in laying out the reasons why Bush should not get the job.

In related news: A useful election resource that I've been referring to over the past few months has been the Electoral Vote Predictor - a site that tabulates predicted Electoral College votes (Note: a good summary of how the Electoral College system in the US works is here) and graphically displays them on a map of the USA (have a look at the Cartogram map view for a more "balanced" view of the weights of the different US states in this election). The site was Slashdotted today, so response times may be a bit slow. I was surprised to find out that the author of the site is Andrew Tanenbaum, a well-known CS figure who now lives in Amsterdam. Having lived outside of the US for over half my life, I can relate to his reasons for creating the web site.
