SLIME/ILISP/ELI - Emacs modes for Common Lisp

I've been having some email exchanges with Luke Gorrie (and others) regarding SLIME on the ilisp-devel mailing list. The SLIME'ers have done some pretty innovative work and it will be interesting to see how far they go towards creating a better Common Lisp interaction mode for Emacs. However, I'm not sure that the effort couldn't have been better spent on improving ILISP or porting ELI to other platforms.
